The 1963 Scanlens VFL was the first release from the chewing gum company and known throughout the industry as the “Holy Grail” of footy card sets. 9 of the 12 VFL teams and 2 interstate teams were represented in the 18 card set, with Essendon getting 3 players included. The front of the cards featured players on a bright background with the back of the cards detailing information about each player. The Graham “Polly” Farmer card is the most highly prized and seems to be a lot rarer than the other 17 cards. There is speculation a large number of copies of the Farmer card were cut badly during production and thrown out. Hence a lot less of his card made the market.
