In 1954, Coles Department Stores released two sets of Victorian Footballers swap cards, the first known as Series 1. They are also known as the “plain backs” Coles footy cards, because the backs of the cards have nothing on them at all – apart from stains in a lot of cases now! Most of the shots were taken at training but there are a few players with portrait shots. Perhaps they were off at the pub having a few shots of their own when the photographer came down to the ground. The fronts of the cards also had the players names, but only the initial of their first names.
